Topic: Computer Upgrade, Need some Opinions

Hey, so I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU which is an Athlon 3000+ Socket 939 right now. After browsing on Tigerdirect and Newegg, I came down to two options.

This 3800+ is a socket 939.

This is a motherboard combo and it comes with a 4200+.

The Socket 939 seems to be dying, so I was wondering if upgrading to the AM2 motherboard would be a smart choice at this point.

edit: Also, is there anything strange I should be looking out for in the AM2 motherboards? Some people said they had to upgrade their video card, and RAM, and I don't really want to do that. Thanks.

Re: Computer Upgrade, Need some Opinions

Socket AM2 motherboards use DDR2 memory, so it would be necessary to upgrade that as well if you got one.  There probably isn't many AGP motherboards either, so you would have to upgrade your video card if it isn't PCI-e.

You know, this kind of thread is probably exactly what that Hardware Discussion forum was for!

Re: Computer Upgrade, Need some Opinions

That isn't much of an improvement. Did you have any luck overclocking? Personally I'd hold off upgrading, or go for a 64-600 intel.

I don't really want to spend too much upgrading <120. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Don't upgrade now. Wait until everything is actually more outdated. 120 isn't good enough to do anything.

Re: Computer Upgrade, Need some Opinions

My thoughts too. Your current plan seems to be to upgrade from a poor CPU to a less poor CPU due to your budget. I'd save up and actually spring for something that will last you more than another month.
