Topic: Google ads

Is the ad at the top of the page really necessary? >_>

Illidan summons them as adds if there's a Dwarf priest in the group.

Actually, the server switch we just had changes the costs rather drastically, and I definitely have no problem with the ads being used, their presence at the top of the screen does bug me.

I made this thread because I don't know the exact logistics of how the ads generate income, and which ads generate how much, exactly. IE - would removing the top ads but keeping the bottom ones reduce the income by a substantial amount? And, if not, would the site still be able to pay it's expenses on just the bottom ones? (And further, if not, how much money are the top ads generating, exactly, because depending, I wouldn't mind paying a bit out of pocket each month to get rid of them. Flaming yetis aren't my thing.)

Re: Google ads

The ads on here aren't google ads anymore, we don't get paid per click. We get paid to have them there.

Re: Google ads

You know, I did notice that, but for whatever reason neglected to remember it when posting this topic.

Should have been informed of the "Paid per Click" method -- I would have clicked every so often.

Re: Google ads

It would be a nice world if we only had the ads nobody sees, wouldn't it. It also wouldn't make any money. It's simple logistics that the top banner earns the most money by far, since it's the most visible. I won't go into the specifics, but lets just say the top ad is by far the most important.

The ads cover our server costs and then some, yes, but not by much. Furthermore we have an "outstanding" loss from the previous years (Crast has pumped well over $1k into the site since he took over), I don't think there's anything wrong with us being able to earn a bit of money now. Money that can be buffered for when the ads might not be profitable again. We've all been fortunate enough that Crast has had the funds to pay for server costs in the past, but things change, and I don't think anyone can blame us for wanting to cover the site costs with ads.

As for donations, they're always welcome.. But we've tried that before, and it doesn't consistently cover the monthly costs, so it likely won't change the ad situation.

Would a "donate $5, get a month without ads" type of thing be of interest to anyone here perhaps?

Yeah. Oh, cruel world.
