I hate this, it also clears all the threads of new post status. Can this be fixed please?
Also I'd like to be able to have a u2u button beside people's posts. I don't know why this was ever removed. It sucks to go to my inbox and then type in their name. There's not even a link to do it from the user's profile.

Seconded. My guesses are that this came about because either:
- it technically provides "increased security" for U2Us, or
- prencher sucks
In either case, it should be reverted.

Also seconded, but I'm pretty sure there is a link from the user's profile. It's just that somewhere along the way you tend to get logged out for some reason.
Yeah it's there in the person's profile. I guess I should have used someone else's besides my own to look for it, haha.
But still, it'd be nice to have it somewhere under their avatar or sig or something.

The login on inbox has to do with a bug that got introduced recently (by Crast, Billmaan) when we cut some session use for anon users. The bug is fixed in trunk, it just haven't been merged to live yet.
Messenger doesn't require extra login, never did, only harmful actions such as modifying your account details or accessing the admin does. Because of the bug, it doesn't reqister you as logged in on the first request to the page, resulting in the login request.
Regarding the lack of the U2U link, that got taken out when a certain designer decided mess with the forum layout way back, and never got re-added.
Update: Deployed the fix. STFU Billmaan.
As a temporary fix, we've added a "Send Message" link below the avatar. As we're working on a new layout, where to integrate this is still a question.
