Re: PSU, or what?

You can try to swap the new parts onto the old mobo one by one instead. If everything works on the old mobo, then you know it's your new mobo. If your old mobo doesn't support your new C2D then I'd leave the "Pentium D on new mobo" test to the last, after you've verified that the problem is down to either mobo or CPU.

Re: PSU, or what?

Test 1: Removed all RAM from old mobo. Put one stick of "new" RAM in.
Result: Booted.

Test 2: Removed Pentium D, kept "new" RAM in. Put C2D in.
Result: Booted.

Conclusion: Dead motherboard?

Re: PSU, or what?

Throwing something out there, But my friend had bought 2 sticks of 1gig corsair ram (2 gigs).  When he put it into his computer, it failed to load.  When just one stick was in, it was ok, either one or the other.   His situation, we found out... was that his motherboard didnt support more than 1.5 gigs of ram.  Thus the problem.

[so i'm just trying to say that while every component might be okay on its own, perhaps there could be some compatability issues]
(also, by the info you have put out there, I would vote 'yes' dead mobo)

Re: PSU, or what?

That would be plausible if the machine hadn't already been functioning fine for 5 months.

Re: PSU, or what?

Having faulty RAM (or just RAM that the mobo can't recognize) will almost always result in mobo beeps, not a complete power-up problem. From the look of it, the mobo is probably dead.

On the bright side, the mobo is probably the cheapest component nowadays to replace =p.

Re: PSU, or what?

WOOT, another 5 bucks! smile

Me and my girl had a running bet, she went psu, I went mobo.
No bulgy capacitors though eh?

Re: PSU, or what?

There is nothing observably physically wrong with the board. Don't place bets on my misfortune :'(

Na, look at it this way, the bets were on what caused your misfortune.
I would have been 3 for 3 if it was a cap.
Sorry bout your board Vis, that sucks man, but there is a bright side right?-at least it's soon enough to send it back.

Hopefully it has just failed and there is not something causing it to die, like an intermittent ground to the case or something scratching the backside of the pcb or some such, be careful putting the new one in. Make sure you don't have any clearance problems. smile

haha man i'll tell you, no matter how many systems i have built i am so fucking paranoid about scratching a trace on my motherboards. thankfully i've never done it, but it's the one thing i am hardcore cautious about every time.

Re: PSU, or what?

Intel got back to me, offered some suggestions, and asked for more information. Suggestions didn't help - hopefully they won't break my balls too badly trying to get an RMA.

Re: PSU, or what?

Been issued an RMA, wooo! Just need to find that cap for the processor socket...

Re: PSU, or what?

So, I set up the replacement motherboard, powered on. Yay!

Plugged in auxillary stuff (HD, optical drives), tried again. It powered on, then powered off, and now it's dead again.

THE FUCK?

Re: PSU, or what?

Are you saying that it -WAS- a PSU problem? and you solved it, so you're going out to buy one?
(because this might be a solution for me as well...)  Please keep us posted.

Re: PSU, or what?

My friend brought over a PSU of his, and using that everything worked as expected. This, coupled with my random intermittent problems since December, indicate to us that it is a PSU problem.

Re: PSU, or what?

And thus, the saga concludes with a happy ending for all involved.

Re: PSU, or what?

Happy ending besides you spending $55 on a PSU.

Also posting ITT just to note that we have a lot of sassy fucks in the tech forum.

Re: PSU, or what?

I wasn't about to wait another weekend to have my desktop running. It's been three weeks as is. Picked up a PSU in person.
