Topic: Chrome

Google Chrome.

If anything, download it to try the address bar INSIDE the tabs.

Re: Chrome

It's okay.. Still a ways to go.

UI is nice but the thing uses insane amounts of memory, makes firefox look like notepad. It uses the process per tab thing but they put plugins in their own process that's shared between all tabs (e.g. a flash process). Only problem is that said process will just grow and grow in memory footprint, and it won't be recycled until you have no tabs with flash open. Yesterday after having opened gamevideos.com and youtube the flash process was sucking up 80mb memory. That's more than my entire firefox which had been running for a couple days.

Nice for a first release though. The renderer is pretty awesome, and javascript very fast. Anything that'll decrease IE marketshare is good. Need some key addons and fixage of that plugin process thing and things should get very interesting.

Re: Chrome

It looks interesting, I am thinking about trying it out once I have found out a bit more about it.  At worst maybe after a release or two.

Who can tell us, or at least link us, to more information about GC?  I am interested in hearing about how secure it is, and its performance relative to other browsers (in particular how "fast" it is, the small memory problem was of course already mentioned thanks to Thomas)

lol.  As always Thomas your maturity and obvious lack of bias are stunning.

It is precisely lack of bias that makes anything decreasing IE marketshare a good thing. Competition forces everybody to improve their standards compliance. Microsoft happens to be notoriously bad at properly implementing the different specifications, or extending them in incompatible ways. I honestly don't give a flying fuck what browser people use, I only care that they follow the standards so I can spend my time designing sites, not my time creating workarounds for browsers that don't follow them.

Your attempts at trolling are as always as pathetic as they are uninformed. Have a nice day.

Actually, if I were trolling, I would be quite successful as it were.

Also, that is a lot of words for not actually refuting my observation.

Re: Chrome

What a mature thread.

Anyhoo, I've been using Chrome for almost an entire day now - after years of IE it's nice to have a browser which won't take 1.2GB of memory if I leave it on for a few days (I swear I got IE7 to that amount). And I find FF slow and uncomfortable, so don't start on that.
The interface is alright, although I wish I had more options... can't press the middle button for scrolling like in IE, which is disappointing, and there is no Back/ Forward menu... I like the bookmarks toolbar a lot, however, particularly the fact you can put folder on it.
Another thing that bothered me is that it failed to properly import my bookmarks form IE. It claimed to, but it got less than 1/3 of them.
But for a first beta release I think it's great. I have no doubt that better customization will become available soon enough.

Now we only have to worry about the fact that Google apparently has the right to use any information that goes through the browser.....

Re: Chrome

Incognito mode deletes your IP address. People on 4chan are reporting being banned, and still being able to post on the same computer. Then again, they could be lying in an attempt to get people to ban themselves.

The lack of middle-mouse button click scrolling is very annoying, and it also failed to import my Firefox bookmarks. Other than that, I think it's great.

That sounds incredibly shady.

Re: Chrome

1) if I hear anyone say "finally something I can use as an alternative to IE" (magis) I will scream and rip their left leg off. It is so slow and frustrating to get people to help themselves by using firefox, and now google comes out with their shiny new toy and everyone jumps on the bandwagon before you can say "give me your leg".

2) I agree with Thomas on the competition thing. People liking Chrome isn't a bad thing, competition is good, both for firefox and for IE. As it happens, IE is pretty shitty, so it definately needs some competition, and fast. Have you heard anything about the new IE8? Consumes more resources than an entire windows XP system. WTF?

3) I think I'm going to hold off on getting chrome for now. I expected google to come out with a browser and for everyone to say "holy shit this is so good it makes everything so much better" not "hmm this is sorta cool I guess".

Well knows he who uses to consider, that our faith and knowledge thrives by exercise, as well as our limbs and complexion. Truth is compared in Scripture to a streaming fountain; if her waters flow not in a perpetual progression, they sicken into a muddy pool of conformity and tradition. A man may be a heretic in the truth; and if he believe things only because his pastor says so, or the Assembly so determines, without knowing other reason, though his belief be true, yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy.

Re: Chrome

IE should already be realizing they have competition... Even my school computers (university of about 25k students) all use firefox now.

Of course, what does microsoft care, IE comes built into windows anyway.  They're more worried about programs like open office, i would think.
