Topic: Weird reading when I start up

I had to wipe my harddrive a week ago, and I'm just working on redownloading all the new Windows updates. Well I restarted my computer last night after getting another one downloaded, and when I get on today there's something telling me that my "primary slave hard disk: SMART bad condition - replace and back up." I have two harddrives. One came with the computer and it was prepartioned into two harddrives, but I combined them into one, and then added a second harddrive. Anyone have any advice on what to do?

Re: Weird reading when I start up

When that happens, your HD is warning you that it WILL die. And probably soon. I'd determine which drive that is, and back it up.

Usually you can run a diagnostic tool available from your HD manufacturer (WD, Maxtor, Seagate, etc), and it'll give you an error code you can use to obtain a free RMA for the drive (if it's still in warranty.) Most HD manufacturers offer advance replacement, where they send you a new drive so you can xfer your data over first, and then you send the old one back, but they will take your credit card number and charge you after 45 days if the drive is not returned.
