Topic: Network Bullshit

So I recently set up a linksys wifi router so I could broadcast signal through my apartment. Everyone is able to connect their laptops to my server, but my desktop is having problems connecting. My laptop is running vista and the connect is perfect. I set up the connection on vista, but my desktop which is using XP is  having problems connecting.

If I have my desktop connect to the signal it will say "Acquiring network address" forever. And then eventually it will connect but i see now activity in the network picture and I can only send but not receive packets. If i manually enter in an IP address it will connect, but the connection is intermittent. It will lag before going to a website, then all of a sudden it will go full speed, lag again, full speed, etc. I have zone alarm on but I doubt its blocking the internet signal. I've installed and uninstalled the network card and got another network card and it still doesnt work. I'm wondering if it could be the board or some other hardware conflict.

Re: Network Bullshit

It's not that I'm ignoring your post, but I really don't know what to suggest, other than "uninstall zonealarm and then see."

What kind of connection is the desktop using? Is it one of those USB wireless things, or a PCI card? If it's one of those small USB sticks, those are notoriously bad for signal, especially in the default plugin point right behind the PC. You probably need to get a USB extension wire (or hook it to a USB hub) to get it out from behind your PC. Even then, it probably won't be as good as a decent laptop wireless card, because they usually have nice integrated antenna(e) in the laptop screen.

Re: Network Bullshit

Also, where is your wireless router located from your desktop?
I've recently had some experience playing around with wired/wireless network setups. Wireless gave me a whole ton of trouble. I settled for extremely long wired connection instead sad

Re: Network Bullshit

Im using a pci card for my desktop. Im not having any signal issues because my laptop can receive the signal just as well as my desktop can.

Re: Network Bullshit

Two things:

1. Zone Alarm sucks, and might be fucking things up.

2. Linksys sucks, flash the router to Tomato or DD-WRT firmware (in order of preference if supported).
