Topic: NetGear router won't work with 360

So, I've been working on getting my 360 back onto xbox live, and so I recently moved my router so that I could do this. My desktop still has good access to the internet through a long cable courtesy of monoprice.com. However, my 360 has...an issue.

When ever I have it connect to xbox live, it disconnects in something like 30 seconds. It connects find, then just randomly disconnects after a little while. I tried doing the "test connection" option, and sometimes it gets all the way to xbox live, and sometimes it times out, and says the connect error is between the 360 and the router. I tried changing the ethernet cable, and the port on the router, I even tried the port that my computer connects to, and still, this happens.

Also, when I try and use TVersity to watch videos on my xbox, it causes my computer to connect and disconnect in the same fashion. I thought maybe there was some setting on the router that limited the number of connections, but even with my computer off, the 360 still wouldn't stay connected.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a Netgear wgr614 router.

Netgear sucks. Buy something compatible with Tomato.

Why? I looked up tomato at wikipedia and I didn't see anything that jumped off the screen as better.

Also, why does netgear suck? I've had more trouble with linksys routers then netgear (until this issue).

Finally, a new question: Is it unreasonable to expect a router to work for more then 2ish years before breaking?

Re: NetGear router won't work with 360

Tomato and DD-WRT are the only firmwares that actually work correctly besides enterprise level stuff like Cisco Aeronet. Tomato is prettier and easier to use. It is stable, fast, and rock solid. Netgear is trash, like any other consumer router including Linksys, because their firmware is trash. There is one Netgear router that supports DD-WRT, which is fine. Firmware makes or breaks the router. Hardware issues with routers are extremely uncommon. Most issues are caused by shitty firmware. I've never had a router die on me physically. I only use routers like Buffalo, Linksys, and ASUS that flash to Tomato. Try it and you'll understand, the ASUS one is like 20 bucks after rebate on NewEgg.

edit: Just remotely logged into my Tomato Buffalo router at home. It has an uptime of over a year running a 20/5 megabit FiOS connection that is torrenting quite often. The NAT tables never fill up, and there is easy to use QoS and no random hiccups or bullshit.

Really, if you aren't buying a Tomato router (or DD-WRT if you prefer it), and you don't have enterprise quality gear, you shouldn't even bother with WiFi.

But the thing is, my WiFi works just fine. It's that my router will only allow one wired connection at a time.

But yeah, I think I might just get an ASUS router.

Edit: which ASUS router would you recommend? I went to newegg and the cheapest one was like 80 dollars.

WL-520gU.

Has been as low as $20 in the past. Again, don't bother getting another router if you aren't going to use Tomato. All regular consumer firmwares suck equally.
