Topic: slow laptop... hijackthis log.

Hey guys. Lately my laptop has been acting way slow for no reason that I can figure out. The task manager is saying that the cpu usage is constantly around 70-90% even when I'm not running any apps. Kind of bothersome.

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2646/logswq2.jpg

I appreciate any advice you all have. This is frustrating.

Re: slow laptop... hijackthis log.

I see absolutely nothing wrong in your hijack this log, nothing that would point to spyware/adware at least.

You should sort your task manager by CPU usage (with the highest at the top) and post a screenshot of that; memory usage isn't your problem.

That said, you can remove these unneccesary tasks with little issue (though they are not malicious, just a bit of a memory waste)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Update] "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll

Those you can get rid of with really no functionality loss, those programs might take a little longer to startup but they won't waste memory when you're not using them.

Now the next list is things you have to decide if you need or not, since I don't know exactly what you do with your PC.  Removing them will reduce functionality of your system.

O4 - Global Startup: Nikon Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nikon\Monitor\NkMonitor.exe Nikon camera stuff
O2 - BHO: Skype add-on (mastermind) - {22BF413B-C6D2-4d91-82A9-A0F997BA588C} - C:\Program Files\Skype\Toolbars\Internet Explorer\SkypeIEPlugin.dll pretty pointless
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll Google toolbar for IE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Camera Assistant Software] "C:\Program Files\Camera Assistant Software for Toshiba\traybar.exe" I have no idea, seems to be redundant with the nikon one
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AppleSyncNotifier] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleSyncNotifier.exe for iphone and ipod touch
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [WindowsWelcomeCenter] rundll32.exe oobefldr.dll,ShowWelcomeCenter (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')

It's highly unlikely any of those above are causing 70% CPU usage, but removing them will free up some  resources. It's possible you have a rootkit which is hiding some worm that is using your CPU, in which case it's going to be something hijackthis can't solve.  Rootkits aren't all that common, though.

Re: slow laptop... hijackthis log.

Most likely your laptop has some sort of power-saving mechanism whereby it basically lowers the CPU's speed when possible.  It's pretty common these days.  That could certainly explain the high CPU usage -- you're using 70% of the available processing power, but there's not much power available.  One thing you might try to see whether this is really the case is to run your laptop on AC power and check the CPU usage again.  Typically the power-saving features are employed less aggressively when the laptop is running on AC power than when it's running on battery power, so if this is really what's going on, you should see lower CPU usage after plugging the laptop into an outlet.

Re: slow laptop... hijackthis log.

Thanks guys. I messed with the power-management stuff and that seems to be what the issue was. It's around 40% processing power now, which is fine with me.

Thanks a bunch.
