so amm is different in sc2. you play 10 games to start you off, and from there blizzard detrerminea which bracket you should be in. each game type is independent of the other; including each arranged team you have with different partners.  I think thus is awesome, becausse they are getting away from win percent as a measure of skill, but put more emphasis on the bracket and rank.   since starting I have been placed in the bronze bracket for 2v2 random team, where I am currently rank 5.  this morning I finished my first 10 placement games in 1v1 and I landed myself in the platnum league, where I am rank #10.  I like the new amm.

Its a nice change from WC3 where more than likely you were playing against people who were way to good to be starting new accounts.

Just to clarify -

There are several "leagues" which are your general skill categories.
Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Pro
Pro is not in-game at the moment.

Each league is broken up into "divisions" of (I think?) around 200 players. My understanding is that all divisions within a league are comparably skilled. Division 1 is not more skilled than division 29.

Like Syko said you play 10 "placement" matches per game type. 1v1, 2v2 RT, 2v2 AT for every individual team, etc. You (or you and your team) get dropped into a league and a division and then move up and down that division's ladder. Exceptionally good or poor play will shift you a league but division shifts within the same league are rare (and probably the result of some sort of autobalancing).

The points you win or lose in a ranked match depend on the relative rank of you and your opponent, who is "favored" (some magical value based on various stats), and a port of "rested XP" from WoW where you get bonus points if you haven't played in a while. This is presumably to prevent your ladder rank from getting raped if you go on vacation.

Also, I just got bumped up to Silver league in 2v2.
Also, they pair random team players vs arranged team players. this makes me upset.
