Topic: Mass Effect 3 Ending Terrible

I haven't seen a wrap-up to a game this stupid since Star Ocean 3.

I got my copy, but I have been too busy to play it... Also I still need to finish the lair of shadowbroker DLC for ME2 before I import my shep over

How is the combat and the conversation dialogs, and the overall game, aside from the ending?

It's a solid game before the ending. The conversation options feel more limited than in previous titles, but not quite as constrained as people have been talking about. It's got a lot of neat one liners and some referential humor that really works. On the whole those elements don't feel strictly inferior to previous titles, you can tell this is just more of a blockbuster action title.

The game play is decent. I think they hit the sweet spot on weapons/inventory between the bare bones of ME2 and the laundry list of vendor trash in ME1. Combat felt more varied, but clunkier. The layout of the battlefields was a noticeable step down in quality, I got lost on maps and I was killed way more than I liked because I had a hard time moving around. The weapons do "Feel" better in terms of how they fire, but felt ineffective next to special abilities. I was playing a vanguard and found I had little reason to do anything but spam Charge (fly at enemy, recharge shields) and Nova (self centered AOE drains shields to do damage). It made me basically invulnerable... except to the enemies with an unavoidable, untelegraphed instant kill melee move. It is for the most part satisfying and you feel very powerful.

They also hit dead on in terms of tone for most of the game. The sense of urgency was really there and you feel like you're working to unite the galaxy. However, some of the decisions have decidedly less impact than you'd expect (especially those imported from previous saves). There are honestly really only two decisions in game that felt like they had any real weight to them.

Some elements don't work, particularly with an enemy character who shows up around halfway through and is involved in major events but gets no explanation or characterization whatsoever. He's apparently from one of the novels or some other expanded universe materials, but that doesn't really excuse how jarring his inclusion is.

Overall I'd give the title a B/B+ if it weren't for those last few minutes.

Re: Mass Effect 3 Ending Terrible

What an amazing way to kill what should have been a great franchise. If the ending was even half way decent, I would have probably ignored a lot of the failings. As it is HP is right on many counts. The game is good, and it plays fairly well (although I can't count how many times I died getting stuck on walls or having Shepard leap over them due to spacebar doing everything), but there are some major plot holes and the return of scanning was unwelcome, and still boring.

Basically every choice you made in the previous games is meaningless, too. Choices largely just change some point values around on your "how many people die at the end" scale. You can compensate by side quests and multiplayer if it's too low.

And the ending, whatever you chose, really sucks.

You know. I knew I'd seen the Mass Effect 3 ending somewhere before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl … vw#t=1261s

Re: Mass Effect 3 Ending Terrible

I didn't love the ending, but I didn't hate it either. As far as climaxes go I thought it was alright, but I definitely would have liked some sort of epilogue for all of the other characters I grew to love. Bioware did always make a point of saying that this was Shepard's story though so in a way it was fitting. As for how your decisions affect how the story plays out, I was a little disappointed throughout the first half of the game about how little it seemed my ported file changed anything, but when I embraced that fact I got over it and just enjoyed watching the story play out. The one thing that bothered me most, as you already mentioned HP, was the new antagonist. He was just plain annoying and unnecessary.

So tell us Delron, what'd you think of the Extended Cut?

I still hate it. My issue wasn't "Not enough closure" or whatever it was suppose to solve. It's still an amazingly abrupt  and quite literal Deus Ex Machina, that hangs entirely on theme you've actively disproved throughout the game and removes all agency from a series that always gave you a lot of agency.
