One of the mods I use, DoTimer (spell timers, originally aimed at warlocks) adds three new API functions geared at checking Mobs for debuffs. Look into it, perhaps.

/cast [help] Renew; [harm] Shadow Word: Pain
/cast [help] Heal; [harm] Smite
Used so you can minimize how many buttons you have. Healing over time and Dmg over time are same button.. .just depends on your target. I like it a lot and use it with many other things (Priests need to do DMG when soloing, Healing when partying so... its awesome IMO)

Dunno if anyone actually reads this thread ever, but this is a pretty awesome macro that lets you leave a BG and not get a deserter debuff. Just gotta make sure you're away from people and don't get put into combat when you use it.
