I REALLY don't like their save system. I'm used to games having autosaves, and I've been cut back to the start of the LAST phase so many times now on different games... it's getting really annoying.

I guess I just need to get back into the habit of saving constantly :(

My biggest complaint is that, up until the space stage, everything feels like a tutorial Just as you're starting to get the hang of the stage, you complete it and move on to a tutorial for another game.

I almost wish they had released each stage as an expansion, so that they could make each one more complex. The next expansion would load your races you had created in the stage before it.

like, maybe release the cell stage as a free downloadable demo as advertisement, release the animal phase as a full game (more in depth, taking longer, more abilities) and so on. The civilization section of the game could easily be a full game on it's own.

animal, tribe, civillization and space could each be $20 games; they would have made 80 dollars for the full package instead of 50, and we would have been more satisfied.

***

I feel a little silly designing all these vehicles and buildings when I'm going to use them for about 20 minutes before abandoning it all and moving on to the next phase. :/

You keep saying this, but I've gotten much more than 4 hours out of my first race and I'm not done.

What do you mean by "beat the game"? Get to the center of the galaxy? I've been having fun just working on badges.
The space stage is quite open. You could spend an hour to beat it or you could spend days in the space stage and never beat it. I thought it was way too much of a grind so I just blasted through it.

As with most everything, though, it is all up to personal taste. If you like flying your ship from planet to planet collecting spice to sell at other planets so that you can play the annoying terraform game so you have more planets to fly to to collect spice, this is the game for you.

What really is the big problem with that? I know that "replay value" is a very strong ranking with games and I get it. To me though, if a game is fun and engaging the first time through....they succeeded? It's even better if I could do it again, and again, and again, but that's often not the case. Take Assassin's Creed, I loved Assassin's Creed but by the end I was tired of the gameplay but the story was still very engaging. After I beat it, I haven't really seriously played it since because I know the story and I had wrung everything out of the gameplay. At this point though, I'm sure I could go back and enjoy it again because its been a year since I last played it. That game was still worth every penny invested in it in my mind.

But to assuage you, I am in space with a militaristic carnivore and basically at the tribal stage with an omnivore who is gonna be a religious/economist society and am still having fun with it, because the first time through I just destroyed everyone. The second time through I'm trying to be much more balanced and it is certainly more difficult.
If it helps LC, my roommate was really discouraged by the reviews and beginning of the game...I then was kind of let down before I got it installed.....we are both now of very different opinions upon reaching the space stage.

Yes, the beginning levels are very simplistic, it is kind of a let down in how repetitious and very easy/frustrating at times...then you get to the civilization stage and its somewhat more difficult (to the point where I stalemated the hard computer when we were all militaristic my first time through...after a bit though you figure out how to win and then it goes quick)...then there is space. I've only played it for a relatively short amount of time but both my roommate and I stopped at the beginning of space because you go "Oh wow this looks big and intricate and I've already been here for hours so I'll come back" and I am stoked to get back into it in a little while tonight.

So, in the end, is it everything Spore was made out/hoped/hyped/whatever to be? Probably not. Is it worth the playtime? Yea, its a fun concept and although many of the stages are very simplistic, there are entire games based around the individual stages so its fun to get a mix of these different types.
Yeah, but what I have said is that the game at first play through is cool because you are still in the discovery phase. Then I said that after you play the space stage for a few hours it gets incredibly grindy and pointless. Also, on a second play through the game is terrible. The only support I have heard from the game has come from people who are still on their first play through.
