Topic: New Computer for diablo 3

Would it be reasonable to assume that if I were to build a computer here in a month or 2, around september for about $700 that it could run Diablo 3 when it comes out? The game doesn't particularly look like something that will be pushing computers to the edge when it arrives. I Also don't see it coming out any later than the end of 2009, because I mean wouldn't it have to look out dated by then? My rigs getting pretty old now, 3.0ghz p4, 1gb ram and a x850, and I have been thinking about upgrading for SC2 and some other games like the witcher, also Titan Quest doesnt run too well on it. But if I can't build something in a few months that won't be running D3 in all it's glory there really is no point. What do you guys think about building in a few months here? Almost looks to me like Blizzard is designing D3 to beable to run on a wide range of machines much like WoW does now, wish they would let us know these kind of things in advance, I'd hate to be running it on medium settings when it launches.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

It is very likely that a $500 well configured PC at the end of this year can play both SC2 and D3 flawlessly when they come out.

I also doubt the two games will feature too much graphical setting customization, beyond the very basic AA, AF, and resolution adjustments.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

I figured it would offer what WC3 offers, along with AA and AF, as Errrrrr said. I doubt a computer wouldnt run low/low/no shadows/no aa if it was purchased in the last 3 years even.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

I might just wait till the beginning of december, so for my month off school I can just play new games non stop. But is it still even going to be a good time to buy then? Or will that nehlam (whatever its called) be the way of the future.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

You can wait for a purchase as long as you like, but new stuff comes out pretty regularly, so if you need/want a gaming PC now, then buy it now.

Given that we have no idea when D3/SC2 are due out, it's not really worth waiting for that, either. As has been said, if you buy a PC now, you'll be able to run those no problem. I suspect that my computer, with an 8800 GTS, will still be able to probably max them out without much difficulty. Blizzard games aren't that intense graphically, even if stylistically interesting and pretty.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

Your current rig reminds me a lot of my last PC. I wouldn't say for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if your current rig could play SC2 and D3 but of course at lower settings. In the back of my mind, I built my PC with playing SC2 and Diablo 3 in mind. But I think my computer will go above and beyond what I will need for both SC2 and D3.

My reasoning behind SC2 is that I really doubt that the Physics and Graphics will go beyond anything that Company of Heroes offers right now. CoH can run on min graphics on my old PC and flawlessly at the highest settings on my new one. So really I have not doubt in my mind that this rig can handle SC2.

That being said I don't think the requirements for SC2 and D3 will differ all that much so I would be willing to bet I'm safe for Diablo 3 as well.

In conclusion, with $700 and the right amount research and time put in to reviews and performance articles, I'm sure you can put together something good enough to run both games.
In 2 months time, maybe with a little luck with sales, $700 should get you at least a Q6600, 8800GT, 2/4GB of RAM, and a decent motherboard easily. Which I think is definitely sufficient to run both games.

Well, he can now get the new Radeon 4850 for the price of an 8800 GT.

Yeah of course. I just meant the 8800GT as a benchmark.
Depending on what parts he wants of course.

Anything worse than an 8800GT would be meh.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

I have had a 7900 GS for a couple of years, and it's starting to die on me.  Is a Radeon 4850 one of the best buys atm?

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

Definitely. ATi is back in the game. No need to look any farther than the drop in prices by nVidia of their new 2xx series.
The people who bought the GTX when it was 600$ are probably kicking themselves right now.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

GTX 260 is $299 now. GTX 280 is $499. Still overpriced compared to ATI parts, but expect them to drop further. This is what competition brings big_smile

Only problem I have with ATI atm is that, their drivers dont allow me to force 4:3 resolutions on my monitor. I hear nvidia drivers are fine with this though. Maybe I will go ahead and build a new computer now, maybe a bit cheaper than originally planned, and if it can't handle d3/s2 whenever they arrive, I should beable to find some really cheap upgrades by that time.

Re: New Computer for diablo 3

Have you looked into Omega Drivers? Maybe those can allow the setting you want.

But honestly, the 4850 today is what the 8800GT was last Oct-Nov.

Not to mention 2x 4850 ($400) will perform almost as well as a GTX 280 ($650 at release). Before the recent price change that was a $200+ difference and even today still a $100 difference for very close performance.
