Topic: Conflicting virus scanners

My computer has been completely overrun with viruses.  I guess the scanner I downloaded after my last AVG trial expired wasn't that good.  Anyway, I decided to dowload a new trial of AVG free, but it keeps warning me not to install it because it found another virus scanner already on my computer.   That scanner would be Anitvirus XP, which I do not want.  I've tried uninstalling it from my computer many times and every time I do, whether it's through the Add/Remove Programs function, or through uninstalling through the file, no matter what I do it says "uninstallation successful" but it's still there on my computer.

How do I get rid of it for good so I can proceed to install AVG?

I'm tempted to go ahead and install AVG anyway but I want to make sure that does not harm my computer.

Haha, did you seriously install an "antivirus" program from a popup? I thought only my mom would do that. Nice spyware infestation you got there. Post an HJT log after running Spybot and Windows Defender in safe mode. From what I've heard, this is like the old school CoolWebSearch in how hard it is to get rid of. Might be easier to just reformat.

That's what I was thinking. I didn't install it intentionally.  Can/should I install AVG anyway, or will this harm my computer?

edit:  How do I switch to safemode?  I dont think I've ever used it on XP before so Im not sure how to go about toding that.

Simplest way is to power off the computer while the Windows loading bar is going. It'll ask you on next boot. Otherwise there should be a key you can hit during POST, but it's different for every mobo maker.

My boss got this Antivirus XP 2008 shit on his work laptop somehow.  It was pretty easy to remove with http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe

More detailed removal directions here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-antivirus-xp-2008 , though the removal program is pretty self explanatory.

You press F8.  It's not related to POST, it's done by the windows bootloader.   It's always f8, regardless of mobo.

Just tried this, and it didn't work sad. Same for Vista?
