Topic: So I got some sort of trojan...

Not sure exactly where or how, but suddenly I had all these processes working in the background and random things telling me that I clearly had a virus and clearly had to press this button in order to remove it. Naturally, I ran to Windows Restore, but the bloody thing deleted all my restore points as well. Long story short, I went to safe mode, ran AdAware (found and removed a bunch of trojans etc.), deleted every new file on my HD that I didn't recognize (Windows still works so I guess I didn't delete anything crucial), and now I'm sitting here and wondering how I can tell if the danger is gone.
One thing that bothers me is that the trojan, among other things, fucked up my display settings - except for replacing my wallpaper with "You have a virus! Quick, click here!" it also removed the Wallpaper and Screensaver tabs from my display settings, and they're still gone.
Halp!
*Stupid puppy face*

[Edit]
I do have access to the wallpaper and screensaver tabs in Safe Mode... the changes, however, don't seem to get saved.

Re: So I got some sort of trojan...

Sounds like you got the fake anti-virus program "Windows XP Virus 200x".

Re: So I got some sort of trojan...

Possible, one of the folders it created was indeed named something with AntiVirus (it also created bogus MSN Messenger folder, and another common thingy I forget).

[Edit]
After reading the link I'm less sure that that's it. Nothing of that sort ran, the only thing was a message on the desktop.

[Edit2]
Well I downloaded the program from that page and it did find and remove some trojans. Somehow I still don't have my wallpaper and screensaver though...

[Edit3]
Alright, it worked (quick scan simply wasn't enough). Many thanks smile

Re: So I got some sort of trojan...

I got hit with it recently after trying to view an olypic video link.

I use spybot which removed all the one's it kept downloading. Then I ran AVG and it found the rest.

Virus clean now.
