Topic: "fags"

So I haven't really thought through what I'm asking, but...

The thought occured to me that generally, homosexuals are accepted.  Frost, no one had a problem with, as far as blizzpub examples go  (it was my understanding he was legitimately bi-sexual; perhaps i missed out on some huge inside joke or something.)

But generally, homosexuals, bisexuals, are accepted with open arms (except in extreme situations.)  At least where I'm from.

Now, where that may be the actual case, if a guy does something that makes it appear as if he's a homosexual, he receives constant ridicule.  And i'm not talking about all-in-fun jabs like "that hat makes you look like such a fag,"  I'm talking about the guys that really make you raise your eyebrow.

...If it's acceptable to BE gay, why isn't it ok to APPEAR gay?  ...Or is it the whole "he's probably in the closet" thing that really bugs people- the idea that he doesn't even really know?

If Kevin Costner were a super hero, his super power would be the ability to always find a rope of proper length and tensility coiled at his feet.

Re: "fags"

You might be onto something.  I remember in high school there was this guy who was openly gay and for the most part he was accepted, at least by his own group of friends.  There were a few people that talked crap about him though.

There was this other guy I knew in high school who's sexual orientation I don't know, but he wore tight leather pants one day and people laughed at that.  I think that was one of those "all-in-fun" laughs though.

Personally, when I see a really flamboyant guy it does kind of annoy me as well as amuse me, sometimes at the same time.  I don't know why.  But an openly gay gay who just acts normal doesn't bother me at all.

Re: "fags"

I think both of you have been around the key point here. People make fun of/notice/target the people who stand out. I would assume that most gay people, just like most heterosexual people, are relatively normal in how they dress/act and just go with the flow. In that sense, the only people who they would really turn off would be the really bigoted people who hate on a moral ground their sexuality. Everyone else who is maybe iffy on homosexuality but fine with normal people would maybe be hesitant at first but then its like "Hey he's a normal guy after all." So the people who are openly gay but don't draw attention to themselves won't get looked down upon.

On the other hand, a person of questionable sexuality who does draw attention to themself because its like "Is he gay? Cuz he sure acts like it here, here, and here." may face more ridicule or that because of the situation. Similarly, people who call a whole lot of attention to themselves over their sexuality will also face it. As in, the really flamboyant gays or the really masculine lesbians. The people who make their sexuality their defining issue and then act in an "abnormal" (I know that sounds negative...but...that's the best word I can think of) will then turn people off because of their abnormality and abrasiveness over it. If you have a gay guy in your face just constantly going "HEY LOOK AT ME IM GAY AND SPECIAL BUT DON'T CALL ME A FAG BECAUSE I'M JUST LIKE YOU" will probably be ridiculed because he's an annoying person, and what can you ridicule about him? His sexuality. Thus, he's called out for it.

So, in the end, I think it is mostly accepted as long as the person is just a normal human being otherwise, the ridicule comes when they are very extreme and make their sexuality the defining characteristic. Just like people call out skanky girls or sleazy guys.

Re: "fags"

I have a friend who likes dick. He came out when me and my buds were passing out in a room in new Orleans.... pretty awkward moment.

"Hey Jim, I gotta tell you something. I already told Dan"

"What Dale?"

"I'm gay"

"No you're not. Shut up and go to sleep."
