Topic: very bad computer problems

as I write this my display is split in to six screens

it all started when I was playing wow and suddenly I got a bunch of green lines and pixels randomly acros my screen and then the computer froze.  (btw sorry if I am typing something worng I can barely see what I am writing here)

I restarted a few times and all would be well until I tried to load up a character or about 5 seconds after loading a character.

Now most of the time my computer wont even start up and sometimes does this thing where my display is split in to 6 screens, or it at least has the green lines or other distortions on my screen

at one point I managed to boot in to safe mode and I was thinking its either my video card is fried somehow randomly or I have some horribly corrupted drivers, so I uninstalled my nvidia drivers and it might be coincidence but this is the first time I have been able to actually load in to windows since that third time I tried to play wow, although like I have been saying I am still having severe display issues.

so I have no fucking clue wtf happened, all I can think of is my video card randomly died, but that seems odd because I have never had any problems with it and this all happened out of the blue.

please help, I need ideas or suggestions about what I should be trying

Re: very bad computer problems

thats a good idea, but I dont think it would explain the blue screens of death I am seeing on start up now

I get the option to Launch Startup Repair, which if I click it just makes the screen reload immediatly, and the other option is Start Windows Normally which means the computer will fail to start at the windows load screen and restart the computer.  =/

Re: very bad computer problems

Could you list me the graphics card you're having this problem on and if you're using SLI or not. Also, have you recently installed SP3?

Re: very bad computer problems

I have had the green lines issue as well, quite a while back  That was my Geforce2 overheating.   I simply had to open the case and aim a desk fan into it as a temporary solution when gaming, and it'd rarely occur.   Eventually I replaced the card, of course.

Re: very bad computer problems

The graphics card is Geforce8600m GS (a laptop card)

also, my OS on the laptop is Vista Home Prem

Crast: I checked for overheating and that doesn't seem to be it, as now even when I try to boot it up after its been off all night it boots in to six-screen mode

I had heard this could be a problem with the 8 series of GeForce cards =/ basically they apparently can spontaneously die.

That would REALLY pis me off, since its a laptop my card is more than likely saudered (sp?) to my mobo, which is saudered to, well, basically everything that matters in the damn thing

Re: very bad computer problems

Try safe mode. If it is still fucking up, this is pretty much exactly what happens with the broken NVIDIA cards of late. Hopefully your laptop is made by a vendor with a good warranty.

Re: very bad computer problems

Sounds like Nvidia faulty hardware. The 8600M was one of the most reported cases.

Re: very bad computer problems

Tried safe mode already, I think that is where I uninstalled the drivers (although I haven't had a successful boot-up in probably 15 attempts since I made this post.)  Windows did run a checkdisk once though, apparently it didn't fix anything however.  It seems like every time I boot up, the failures gradually get worse and worse....because lately, every single start up is six grainy screens, and the computer never successfully boots up even to safe mode.

I will have to double check it when I get home, but I believe my laptop only had a one year warrenty.  Bought it ~14 months ago, definitely at least 13 months.

Anyway if I do end up having to buy a new computer because of this, I am going to be severely tempted to try that new ATi card that has been all the rage.

Re: very bad computer problems

Or you can stop buying laptops and get something that doesn't need to be completely replaced if a small component fails wink.

Re: very bad computer problems

I am inclined to agree with you Pissing.  I still miss my laptop, but I don't see myself buying one in the future that can run more than Blizzard RTS games.
