Re: New Computer

There's no need to buy Core i7 now, it is way overpriced (along with the motherboard and DDR3 RAM). Also, the video card you're getting can be found cheaper on sale, as can the hard drive. Finally, get a Samsung drive instead of LG, get a better power supply (Corsair modular HX series), and lose the ricey case for a cheaper Lian Li BTX case.

Re: New Computer

I think your build is fine. There is nothing wrong with future proofing if you're willing to pay the price. It's a solid rig.

Re: New Computer

Well, yeah there's nothing wrong with the parts he selected, but it is nowhere near a good value for the money. In fact, it is pretty horrible. You can get something with 95% of the performance for half the price.

Re: New Computer

Well do you have any suggestions then? The current computer I have is about 6 years old, I paid a good chunk of money to put it together with pretty top of the line stuff because I simply don't enjoy upgrading my computer every couple of years, I'll fix up a part here or there as needed but I like knowing that it will last me for quite awhile.

I haven't found the card anywhere cheaper, I went with a more expensive modular power supply actually from the other thread, found the hard drive for 20 bucks cheaper.

I don't know, it just seemed like the jump is being made to DDR3 so I should buy a board/processor/etc. that would be able to last instead of DDR2 that seems to be on its way out? Am I being totally retarded here? Like I said, this is my first serious foray into putting a system together similar to the one I did 6 years ago, with substantial help.

Re: New Computer

DDR3 will be the standard without a shadow of a doubt. If you buy a DDR2 based system don't expect to be able to upgrade/add RAM or upgrade your CPU in the future.
The i7 920 is a good processor, in some situations it actually keeps up or surpasses with the best Quad cores (QX9770, QX6850) from the LGA 775 socket.

Since you said you don't really upgrade your systems you could go with a midrange P45 motherboard with some DDR2 and a E8500 Dual-Core processor and be set for a good 3-4 years.
