Topic: Building my own computer

Greetings.  I am well aware that I will probably get flamed for multiple things in this thread but I figure you guys are knowledgeable on the subject and I've been out of the loop for quite some time, so hey I'll give it a shot.

I've been looking to build my own computer for quite some time now.  2-3 months I'd say.  I've been using a MacBook Pro since May of 2006 (I go to college and come home a lot so it's practical to take on the bus) but it just doesn't cut it anymore.  Plus I'm doing a lot of stuff with business applications that only run on Windows so it's time to go back and will be as part of my career so I need Windows.

Basically I want to build my own rig.  I plan on doing a lot of gaming and audio work and want to be able to run shit as smoothly as possible.  As far as price range goes, I'd like to keep it around $2,000.

I understand this is a "BUILD ME A COMPUTAHHH PLEASE" thread, but I'd rather swallow my pride and ask people here who know things rather than waste money on inferior products and just be upset in the long-run.  The latest threads are either outdated or things aren't even listed on Newegg.  Thanks very much in advance, I really appreciate any advice.

EDIT:

Critique this build!  Let me know what things you'd change.

Yeah I started looking at that but I had some questions as to it being outdated.  For example, the processor is not sold on New Egg anymore.

So I understand that i7/DDR3 isn't nearly as cost efficient as Duo/DDR2, but I feel like it's kinda odd to buy old technology when new shit is available.  No doubt DDR3 will become the standard at some point, but it's still significantly more expensive at the moment than DDR2.  I don't mind spending the extra cash if it means not having to upgrade for 2-3 years and being able to run everything smoothly.

Re: Building my own computer

I posted a potential build in the original topic.  I'd appreciate if you guys could let me know how you feel about it.  Also, thoughts on getting a Solid State Hard drive to install my operating system on?

Re: Building my own computer

god.

That blows my custom box out of the water for a good bit less than what I paid for mine...'course that was back in 2002.

Well knows he who uses to consider, that our faith and knowledge thrives by exercise, as well as our limbs and complexion. Truth is compared in Scripture to a streaming fountain; if her waters flow not in a perpetual progression, they sicken into a muddy pool of conformity and tradition. A man may be a heretic in the truth; and if he believe things only because his pastor says so, or the Assembly so determines, without knowing other reason, though his belief be true, yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy.

Even cheaper (and 2ms response time) 24" display if you want to cut more on cost:

For future reference, here is the best monitor picking thread I've ever seen.
