Topic: installing to 360 hard drive

So... I just realized there's a "copy game to hard drive" function on the 360.  Does this enable me to play without the disc? ...Cause I might just have to pick up a new larger hard drive and start renting games like mad if that's the case...

If Kevin Costner were a super hero, his super power would be the ability to always find a rope of proper length and tensility coiled at his feet.

Re: installing to 360 hard drive

nvm just tried it with a game and realized I still have to have the game disc in.  that makes this function extra retarded.  Is there anyone out there working on hacking it?

hehe What makes it retarded? The fact that you can't get over them by being able to always play games you didn't buy or that it was implemented because 360s are loud beasts and run quieter and cooler when the optical drive isn't running? If you play a game a lot, this small investment in time and HDD space is worth what you have spent.

Your two posts back to back gave me a good chuckle.

I'm not sure if there is a hack for it but if there is, the people that use it can't go online with it. They can't get updates nor buy DLC. MS often if not always checks if any code is altered when you go online. It's been this way since Live on the original Xbox. For some people the fact of not being bale to go online is worth being able to hack their 360s. But I rely on playing games online to make my games last longer.

I'm not very savvy with the Xbox mod scene. I do know that there are mods to play pirated/burnt games without hardware mods. Or at least I remember there being a way back then.

There are many sites out there that are devoted to this type of stuff. I just have no real direction to point you in.

And the feature has been around since they went NXE. It was one of the big features.

The idea is also that it will make the load times a bit shorter when you copy a game to HD.
Except for halo 3, somehow it will make load times longer smile

Re: installing to 360 hard drive

For certain open world games, it also makes the game experience a bit better, as there's less likelihood of missed textures when you go somewhere the streaming didn't anticipate.

And for all games which utilize streaming, you won't hear the constant roar of the drive.

Re: installing to 360 hard drive

What's this about halo 3 not running faster when installed? I'm tired of having to wait before I can play on any different mode.

Also, where is this option to install located?

Re: installing to 360 hard drive

That fact that you believed for a second that Microsoft/Game Publishers would fuck themselves over makes this thread extra retarded.

Re: installing to 360 hard drive

well I didn't think they'd put an install to hard drive function on the system at ALL.  When I found out otherwise, I had a brief glimmer of hope before I tried it out.
I'll admit, that was probably kind of foolish.

I called the option retarded because I didn't know what it was used for.  Now that you've argued for it, it makes sense.

On one hand I could make my 360 last longer by using this option... On the other hand, it might then burn out directly after my Best Buy's warranty period instead of directly before it. tongue

I know you speak BB but Walmart's policy is that they exchange it for a new 360. Really no questions asked or checking if it really doesn't work. If BB's is like this, just take back the 360 towards the end of your warranty. Tell them it freezes during play or something but it does start up. Then you will have a new 360 that will last longer... maybe.

On the "My Xbox" slide on the dashboard, go to Game Library, then select the game, and the bottom option will be Install to HDD.

Yes, Halo 3 doesn't play well on the HDD. It was designed to play directly off disc. Bungie had a message once you popped in Halo 3 after updating to NXE.

I don't have a Wal Mart receipt...

Re: installing to 360 hard drive

Walmart was an example. You can take it back to BB and say it freezes after 15-45 minutes of play on all games most of the time. This will explain why it starts up but I doubt they will sit and wait until it freezes.
