Topic: Transfer of files quickly?

Hey,

so I just downloaded a bunch of stuff on my laptop and I need to transfer them to my desktop. Is there a way I can do this quickly without being on a network? My laptop uses the same internet as my desktop and we're in the same house but I don't know how to transfer the files without using AIM/mIRC/MSN. I've heard of FTP but I don't know how it works.

1- external hard drive
2- thumb drive (usb drive)
3- transfer across the network that both your computers are, in fact, on
4- Burn a CD
5- AIM/mIRC/MSN
6- remove your hard drive from your laptop and connect it to your pc
7- Email them
8- etc

Ctrl + C and then Ctrl + V

I've used powerfolder before, it's goofy at first because you have to send yourself an "invitation" but it's quick and gets large/many files.
